This singular style of furniture began with King Gustav III, who brought new standards of sophistication in design and architecture to Sweden. Inspired by the ornate furnishings of Versailles he brought many fine French pieces to Sweden and Swedish artisans soon created simpler versions, carved and often gilded or painted. Their simple lines and cool palate reflect a particularly Swedish sensibility.
