Long admired by European connoisseurs,
Swedish antiques are moving to the forefront of the US
antiques market. American collectors, inspired by the
elegance and enduring grace of these unique pieces, are
incorporating them in rooms that range from opulent and
traditional to modern. The clean spare lines, shades of
gray and soft whites, individualize and enhance any
décor.
This singular style of furniture began
with King Gustav III, who brought new standards of
sophistication in design and architecture to Sweden.
Inspired by the ornate furnishings of Versailles he brought
many fine French pieces to Sweden and Swedish artisans soon
created simpler versions, carved and often gilded or
painted. Their simple lines and cool palate reflect a
particularly Swedish sensibility.
